Sean Paul – nova runda kralja MTV Jamajke Sean Paul se, nakon neočekivano duge pauze, pokušava vratiti na scenu u teškim danima za cenzurirani dancehall. Ima li njegov novi album 'The Trinity' dovoljno safta za prave fanove žanra ili je i Sean Paul posve prodao dušu MTV-ju i tinejdžerskim magazinima? Album je trebao biti vani ovo ljeto. No nije da kasni samo nekoliko mjeseci – obzirom na količinu uspjeha koju je Sean Paul postigao 2002. godine albumom ‘Dutty Rock’, kada je autentični dancehall uvelike zahvaljujući njemu postao pop bez previše odricanja i prilagodbe masovnom ukusu, očekivalo se da će brže-bolje pogurati snimanje novog materijala i utržiti još koju nulu na novonastaloj maniji.Baš kao, recimo, Dizzee Rascal, koji je u godinu dana izbacio dva albuma, svjestan da brzopotezni desant autentičnog britanskog undergrounda zvanog grime u mainstream neće trajati vječno.Grime je u međuvremenu sve češće počeo zvučati kao američki hip hop, a dancehall... S jedne ga je strane zadesila ista sudbina, no s druge ga je ubio nagli protu-val, pravi tsunami podignut od aktivista za ljudska prava koji su (posve razumljivo) u velikom dijelu opusa istaknutih dancehall njuški pronašli govor mržnje kakav je jednostavno nedopustiv za promociju na radiju i televiziji.Nije pomoglo ni to što je Sean Paul najmanje kriv za to, kao dobri klinac iz centra koji se nikad nije hvalio ispucavanjem rafala u glavu osoba drugačije spolne orijentacije, kao ni to što se po hrvatskim tinejdžerskim magazinima nalazio na vrhu liste najpoželjnijih mužjačkih popstarova godine, uz bok Rafi i drugim zvijezdama zaboravljene Storysupernove. Klima za dancehall u 2003. jednostavno nije bila povoljna – Beenie Man više nije mogao nastupiti u Britaniji, Puma je raskinula ugovor s Elephant Manom i scena se vratila tamo odakle je otišla, jamajkanskoj ulici. Iako, nažalost, nije vratila i zvuk, pa je velika količina riddima u posljednjih godinu dana izgubila oštricu i uporno se pokušavala dodvoriti američkom hip hop/R&B mainstreamu.Što se, nažalost, sad, kada se situacija malo stišala, može reći i za poveći dio njegova neizostavnog, iako još ne znamo koliko uspješnog povratka.Za one koji su 2002. godinu proveli u Afganistanu, podsjetnik da je Sean Paul upravo tada konačno keširao trud koji ulaže još od 1996. godine, kada se prvi put ozbiljnije latio mikrofona u Kingstonu.Rođen kao Sean Paul Henriques 8. siječnja 1973, današnji kralj pop dancehalla bio je klinac iz ugledne obitelji St. Andrewa, odgajan od strane majke slikarice. Isticao se u sportskim aktivnostima, ne bi li kasnije postao i član nacionalnog vaterpolo tima!Obrazovan i načitan, mogao je birati koji god unosni uredski posao želi, ali ljubav prema dancehallu bila je jača – vježbao je svoje rime i svoj način tostanja po uzoru na velikog idola Super Cata, ne bi li se 1993. povezao s članovima poznatog benda Third World i stekao prve ozbiljnije kontakte za ulazak u biznis.Prvi singl ‘Baby Girl’ objavljuje 1996. godine, nakon čega slijedi čitav niz velikih jamajčanskih hitova kao što su ‘Nah Get No Bly (One More Try)’, ‘Deport Them’, ‘Excite Me’, ‘Infiltrate’ i ‘Hackle Mi’.No kada je 1999. s kolegom Mr. Vegasom i američkim reperom DMX-om snimio ‘Here Comes The Boom’, pjesmu za soundtrack hip hop filma ‘Belly’, otvorena su posve nova i puno veća vrata mogućnosti. Iste godine kroz njih je prošao trijumfalno s ‘Hot Gal Today’, svojim prvim top 10 hitom na Billboardovoj rap ljestvici, pa godinu dana kasnije nastupa na velikom hip hop festivalu Summer Jam u New Yorku.Dva nagrađivana i suludo dobro prodavana solo albuma kasnije, s naglaskom na ‘Dutty Rock’ i svima poznate hitove ‘Gimme The Light’, ‘Like Glue’, ‘Get Busy’, ‘I’m Still In Love With You’ (bez kojih nije bilo nijednog poštenog plesa na ljeto 2002. godine) i Sean Paul se vraća.‘Otada sam održao samo jedan novogodišnji koncert u Etiopiji. I onda sam se zatvorio u studio. Šest milijuna ljudi me prihvatilo – jednostavno sam morao biti siguran da će to učiniti ponovno’, kaže on danas, dodavši kako je svjestan kako je upravo postao sinonimom za dancehall. ‘Svi čekaju moj album. Iako je materijal oscilirajući i ne pretjerano loš, nikada ne doseže vatrenu, basom natopljenu zabavu prethodna dva uratka, prečesto svodeći recept na kenjkave i prenakićene synthove te u rezultatu ne pretjerano moćne ritmove, koji zvuče razvodnjeno i prilagođeno mainstream radiju.Ali opet, to najbolje ilustrira riddim scenu u posljednjih godinu dana dancehall krize.Nije bed to što je ‘The Trinity’, kako sam autor kaže, manje plesan i 'mračniji' album od prethodnog, nastao pod utjecajem ubojstva frenda i razmišljanjima o problemima u svijetu, već o tome što prečesto zvuči kao plesni album na koji se ne može plesati.Unatoč tome što ima puno pjesama koje su tragični višak (uključujući i ‘Connection’ s Nina Sky – dobra ideja, mlitava realizacija, ali garantira eksploziju na danceflooru), cjelina nije za baciti – najavni singl, još jedna oda pušenju cannabisa ‘We Be Burnin’ možda i nije slatkiš na koji se čekalo, ali ‘Ever Blazin’ je simpatični 80’s cheese, ‘Head To Toe’ dobra stara bomba, ‘Give It Up To Me’ jedan od onih hitova koje možete zviždati, ‘Straight Up’ desert za sve ovisnike o Coolie Danceu, ‘Yardie Bone’ s Wayneom Marshallom pravi je reggae dijamant, kao i odlična ‘Never Gonna Be The Same’.Neloš album, dakle, ali ‘neloš’ nije isto što i briljantan. A od Seana Paula ne očekujem išta manje od toga! |

U zadnjem dijelu hip hop povijesti nalazimo se u polovici 90. godina.Nakon tragičnih smrti 2 Paca i Notorious B.I.G-ja, američki rapperi su smirili ratoborne duhove na relaciji Istok - Zapad. Opet je u điru jedinstvo i mir (koliko je to moguće u jednoj kulturi čiji korijeni vuku iz siromašnih geta) i snimaju se pjesme koje pozivaju na jedinstvo hip-hop zajednice.Napokon dolazi i vrijeme kad ovaj glazbeni pravac postaje popularan i u ostatku svijeta, ne više samo u SAD-u. Sjećamo se 1996. godine i Cooliove pjesme "Gangsta's Paradise". Koliko god se mnogima (uključujući i mene) ta pjesma ne sviđala, ostaje činjenica da je ona napravila najviše za popolarizaciju hip-hopa u Europi. Stvar je postala najprodavaniji i najpuštaniji single godine, a nakon Coolija slijedili su i Fugees (Wyclef, Praz i L-Boogie, danas poznata kao Lauryn Hill), koji su sa svojim drugim albumom "The Score" premašili sve rekorde u povijesti rapa. Stvar je postala jasna, hip-hop ulazi u Europu na velika vrata. Počela se razvijati scena u Njemačkoj, Francuskoj i ostalim europskim državama. Napokon su ljudi shvatili da se kroz rap može izražavati na svim jezicima, a ne samo na engleskom. Ta spoznaja je bila ključna za prelazak granica i razbijanje predrasuda o Hip-Hopu kao isključivo crnačkoj kulturi.Godinu dana kasnije, grupa Wu-Tang Clan snima drugi (dvostruki) album "Forever", koji odmah po izlasku skače na 1. mjesto britanske (?!) top-liste. Hitovi su se samo redali i rapperi napokon počinju zarađivati kao i ostale velike glazbene zvijezde. Sjetimo se, recimo, Jay-Z-jeve pjesme "Hard Knock Life", koja se mjesecima nije micala s MTV-ja, a to je bilo još prije 5 godina.1999. godine Dr. Dre upoznaje Eminema, poziva ga u svoj studio i stvorena je nova mega zvijezda. Eminem snima prvi album "The Slim Shady LP" za Dreovu izdavačku kuću The Aftermath i postaje miljenik klinaca širom svijeta, prvenstveno zahvaljujući hitu "My Name Is". Godinu dana kasnije, Eminem drugim albumom "The Marshall Mathers LP" dokazuje da nije "one hit wonder", nego da se na njega mora računati i na duge staze i usput kupi sve moguće glazbene nagrade, od Grammyja do MTV-ja.2000. godine grupa Outkast iz Atlante nakon 3 odlična albuma, postaje svjetski slavna tek na četvrtom, i to zahvaljujući pjesmi "Ms. Jackson". U to vrijeme, poznati rapperi otvaraju svoje izdavačke kuće, stvaraju svoje brandove odjeće i obuće, bacaju se u filmsku industriju, i tp ne samo kao glumci, već i redatelji.Usprkos globalizaciji i komercijalizaciji hip-hopa, još uvijek ima dosta talentiranih MC-ja i DJ-a kojima slava i novčana zarada nisu najvažniji pri umjetničkom stvaranju. Na prijelazu stoljeća, veliku je ulogu odigrala newyorška izdavačka kuća Rawkus, okupivši mlade talente kao što su Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Pharaohe Monch i Hi-Tek. Prvi važni album tog "revolutionary" stila u hip-hopu bio je onaj grupe Black Star, koju su činili Mos Def i Talib Kweli. Međutim, glavna stvar bio je 2000. godine album "Train of Thought" grupe Reflection Eternal (Talib Kweli i DJ Hi-Tek), što je meni osobno jedan od najkvalitetnijih hip-hop albuma uopće. Glazba je lagana i vrlo slušljiva, a Talib rastura svojim verbalnim sposobnostima i pozitivnim rimama.Osim New Yorka, i na zapadnoj obali niču kvalitetne hip-hop grupe, koje bismo uvjetno mogli svrstati pod underground scenu (naime, hip-hop se u zadnje vrijeme striktno podijelio na "komercijalu" i "underground" - takve podjele nisu dobrodošle, ali ponekad ih je teško zaobići), kao npr. u LA-u Dilated Peoples i Jurassic 5 ili u Oaklandu odlični Hieroglyphics.Danas je rap postao najpopularniji glazbeni stil u svijetu i u kombinaciji sa srodnim urbanim vrstama (R&B i dancehall) osvaja sve glavne pozicije svjetskih top-lista, puni radio i TV eter, i to na svim jezicima i u svim krajevima svijeta. Nakon 25 godina službenog postojanja, mislim da se danas može sa sigurnošću reći da je Hip-Hop osvojio svijet. |
U prvoj polovici 90-ih godina Hip-Hop kultura se proširila po cijelom SAD-u, tako da se glavnina rap scene nije više nalazila samo u New Yorku i L.A-u. U New Jerseyu su počele nicati odlične grupe koje su gajile onaj izvorni b-boy zvuk. Naughty By Nature su se vratili 1993. s odličnim drugim albumom "19 Naughty III", koji pamtimo po hitu "Hip-Hop Hooray". Iste godine u istom gradu pojavili su se Lords Of The Underground, a tu su bili i filozofski (ali ponekad i previše rasistički) raspoloženi Poor Righteous Teachers. 1994. na scenu dolazi Nine, legendarni "bog" undergrounda. I Fugees. Da, malo ljudi zna da je ta grupa postojala i puno prije one famozne obrade "Killing Me Softly".1994. je bila sudbonosna godina i za hip-hop scenu u Atlanti, glavnom gradu Georgije na Jugu SAD-a. Tamo grupa Outkast snima svoj prvi album nazvan "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik", koji je definirao zvuk i čari južnjačkog rapa: lagana glazba uz plesne beatove, savršena za ljetnu vožnju po gradu. Svi znate kako su Outkast postali svjetski popularni prošlih godina, zahvaljujuci hitovima "Ms. Jackson", "So Fresh, So Clean" i "Whole World", nakon 4 snimljena albuma.U Chicagu je glavnu riječ vodio Common Sense, prvi predstavnik danas vrlo popularnog "revolutionary" stila, koji je kasnije morao zbog pravnih problema skratiti ime, tako da se danas zove samo Common. Njegov drugi album "Resurrection" pokazuje kako dubok rap može biti kada je MC izvrstan liričar.Iz Philadelphije dolazi grupa The Roots, pravi hip-hop band, u kojem svaki član svira instrument (dakle, "ziva" glazba) + MC. Njihov drugi album "Do You Want More?" (1995) je objektivno jedan od najboljih rap albuma ikad snimljenih i žalosno je što Rootsi tek sad uživaju onu slavu i zaradu koju su još davno zaslužili. Danas su oni najveća koncertna hip-hop atrakcija.Glavne su se stvari ipak događale u New Yorku. Kad se govori o povijesti rapa, ne može se zaobići Wu-Tang Clan, pravu malu vojsku koja broji čak 9 jakih MC-ja: Method Man, Ol' Dirty Bastard, RZA, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, GZA, U-God, Masta Killah i...nikad ih se ne uspijem sjetiti svih. Uglavnom, svaki od njih snima i solo albume. Njihov prvi zajednički album "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chembers)" značio je početak tzv. "wu-groznice" koja je dugo vladala među hip-hop publikom, a još uvijek se osjeti, iako su se wu-tangovci pomalo "razvodnili" u zadnjih 5 godina.Nas, mladi i vrlo talentirani MC iz kvarta zvanog Queens Bridge, snima 1994. prvi album "Illmatic", koji ubrzo ulazi među klasike hip-hopa. S tog albuma izdvojio bih pjesmu "NY State of Mind", koja produkcijski (DJ Premier) i liricki savršeno stvara u glavama slušatelja slike newyorskih ulica i kvartova, čak i ako nikad niste bili tamo. Nas je postao planetarno popularan među širom publikom tek nakon drugog albuma "It Was Written" (1996), prvenstveno zbog pjesme "If I Ruled the World", na kojoj mu gostuje Lauryn Hill, tada još članica grupe Fugees. Iz Nasovog kvarta dolazi Mobb Deep, još jedna grupa vrijedna spomena, koja je do danas snimila 5 odličnih albuma, a šesti izlazi uskoro.Tada već dokazani majstori Guru i Premier (zna se - Gang Starr) 1994. godine snimaju 4. album "Hard to Earn", još jedno žestoko izdanje za prave hip-hop glave, a 4 godine poslije se vraćaju dublji nego ikad s još jednim klasikom "Moment of Truth", s kojeg su skinuti singlovi "You Know My Steez", "Royalty" i "The Militia". Guru je, usporedno s radom u grupi Gang Starr, radio i na svom projektu Jazzmatazz, na kojemu je, u suradnji s raznim glazbenicima iz svijeta jazza, R&B-ja, soula i rapa, spajao različite glazbene stilove.Ne može se govoriti o New Yorku sredinom 90-ih, a da se ne spomene The Notorious B.I.G., još poznat kao Biggie, koji je potpisao za Puff Daddyjevu (danas se valjda zove P.Diddy, ak se ne varam) etiketu Bad Boy i snimio prvi album "Ready to Die", nakon kojega ga je newyorška publika zavoljela, a MTV je rado vrtio videospotove za singlove "Juicy", "Big Poppa" i "One More Chance". Biggie se kasnije zakačio sa svojim bivšim kompićem 2 Pacom iz LA-a (ili obrnuto: 2 Pac se zakačio s njim). Uglavnom, rezultat je tužan: 2 Pac ubijen 1996. (počinitelj nepoznat), a i Biggija je bogami ista sudbina zadesila par mjeseci kasnije (počinitelj opet nepoznat). |
Na prijelazu iz u 80. u 90. godine hip hop je počep biti sve popularniji.Hip-Hop je u to vrijeme postajao sve popularniji i sve se više nametao američkoj javnosti. Iako je rap tada bio žešći nego ikada, sve više mladih, bez obzira na boju kože, počeo se poistovjećivati s ovim glazbenim pravcem, a nastajali su i prvi rap časopisi (legendarni "Word Up!").Dok je u New Yorku vladala revolucionarna politički angažirana struja (Public Enemy, BDP, Big Daddy Kane, Gang Starr...), na suprotnoj strani Amerike, u L.A-u počela se razvijati pošast koju su kritičari kasnije nazvali "gangsta rap". Ice-T je bezazleno krenuo s takvim načinom izražavanja u kojemu ni malo ne bira riječi u svojim pjesmama, već se koristi najsurovijim uličnim žargonom, onakvim kakav koriste američki uličari, najniži sloj društva. On ne samo da govori kao oni, nego se i poistovjećuje s njima.Prava pljuska američkoj javnosti bila je grupa N.W.A. (Niggaz Wit' Attitudez), koju su originalno sačinjavali Ice Cube, Eazy-E, Dr.Dre, MC Ren i DJ Yella. Njihov prvi album "Straight Outta Compton" izašao je 1989. g. i sranja su krenula. Za tadašnje vrijeme, bio je presedan da u CD shopovima širom SAD-a bude CD na kojem je svaka druga riječ "muthafucka", "bitch" ili nesto slično, varijacije na temu. U pjesmama naši junaci bez dlake na jeziku govore o dilerima, prostitutkama, pištoljima i kurvama, ali ne u smislu kao da je to nešto negativno.Mnogi su bogati bijeli Ameri kupovali taj album jer su mislili da će se na taj način solidirati s najnižim slojem, neki su na taj način željeli vidjeti što se događa u siromašnim četvrtima, tamo gdje se oni boje naći i sl. Zbog pjesme "Fuck tha Police" članovi grupe su imali problema čak i s F.B.I-jem. Evo kako Ice Cube započinje pjesmu: "Fuck tha police comin' straight outa underground / A young nigga got it bad 'cause I'm Brown / And not the other color, some police think / They have the authority to kill the minority / Fuck that shit 'cause I ain't the one / Fool and punk muthafucka with a badge and a gun...". Kad su novinari pitali Cubea zašto sebe naziva "nigga" (do tada, to je bio posprdan naziv za Crnca), on je odgovorio da će se nakon njihovih pjesama značenje te riječi promijeniti. Oni žele pokazati da "nigga" nije neki jadan, smotani "crnjo" po kojem će svi gaziti i koji ništa neće moći reći, nego da je to onaj koji više neće trpiti poniženja i koji će od sada svima je*at sve po spisku. To su N.W.A. i uspjeli postići.Novine u Americi bile su pune članaka o lajavim gangsterima iz Comptona (ozloglašena siromašna četvrt u south central L.A-u), da je popularnost "Crnčuga sa stavovima" porasla iznad svih očekivanja. Nakon toga, po L.A-u su počele nicati slične grupe kao gljive poslije kiše i svi su se busali u prsa kako su baš oni iz Comptona. Ali njihovi idoli N.W.A. su se brzo raspali - jer se nisu uspjeli dogovoriti oko podjele para. Članovi grupe krenuli su u svoje (nekima uspješne, nekima baš i ne) solo karijere.Gangsta rap nije pustio svoje korijene samo u L.A-u, nego i u Houstonu, TX. Tamo je krajem 80-ih nastala grupa Geto Boys, koju se u mnogočemu može uspoređivati s N.W.A. Geto Boyse pamtimo po odličnim hitovima "Damn It Feels Good to Be a Gangsta" i "Mind Playin' Tricks on Me". No, danas se mnogi sjećaju te grupe samo po tome što je to bila prva Scarfaceova grupa.Rapperi u New Yorku, međutim, nisu cijenili "gangsta rap", kao ni svoje kolege sa zapadne obale. Čak štoviše, imali su stav da je gangsta rap samoubojstvo mlade Crne populacije. Grupa Public Enemy na četvrtom albumu "Apocalypse 91...The Enemy Strikes Black" iz 1991. g. okreće svoj nišan od bogatih bijelih vlastodržaca prema Crnim gangsterima i ukazuje na to koliko ilegalan način zarade šteti Crnoj zajednici u Americi. Iako je taj album jako dobro prodan (s njega su skinuti hitovi "Can't Truss It", "Nighttrain", "By the Time I Get to Arizona" i "I Don't Wanna Be Called Yo Nigga"), očito je bilo da njihova popularnost opada u odnosu na "gangstere" iz L.A-a.Sad se opet vraćamo zapadnoj obali. Ice Cube je prvi napustio N.W.A. i 1990. g. snimio svoj prvi solo album "AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted" (nisu slučajno 3 velika slova "K" u riječi "AmeriKKKa"), a ostatak ekipe je snimio drugi N.W.A. album "Niggaz4Life" bez njega, ali pokazalo se da je ipak Cube bio glavna karika u lancu i da su bez njega slabi, tako da su se uskoro potpuno raspali. No, ni to nije prošlo kulturno. Slijedila su prepucavanja preko pjesama: prvo su se pljuvali Eazy i Cube, onda Eazy i Dre.Ice Cube je snimio 3 odlična albuma do 1993. g, ali najmaštovitiji je bio Dr.Dre. On je 1992. svojim prvim solo albumom "The Chronic" započeo novi trend, koji je on sam nazvao G-funk. Otkrio je i novu zvijezdu, Snoop Doggy Dogga, koji mu gostuje na albumu. Album se prodao u 3 milijuna primjeraka (hitovi: "Nuthin' but a G-Thang", "Dre Day" i "Let Me Ride". Dvije godine kasnije izlazi dugoocekivani Snoopov album prvijenac "Doggystyle", naravno, u Dreovoj produkciji (stariji se sjećaju pjesama "What's My Name?" i "Gin & Juice". Gangsta rap je službeno mrtav, započela je nova zaraza: G-funk nije slavljenje poroka, već jednostavno opuštanje uz laganu, rolajuću ljetnu mjuzu, žene, cuga & pljuga - to je bila bit te glazbe.Dok je na zapadnoj obali vladala "komercijalna" struja, na Istoku su se rapperi i dalje brinuli da hip-hop ne izgubi svoju bit i vraćali glazbu njenim korijenima. 1991. pojavila se mlada grupa iz New Jerseya, koja je mnogo obećavala. Zovu se Naughty by Nature, a proslavili su se hitovima "O.P.P." i "Ghetto Bastard". Moram spomenuti i još neke newyorske grupe vazne za to vrijeme, kao što su De La Soul i A Tribe Called Quest. 1994. g. Public Enemy opet izlaze na površinu, pokazujući da ih trendovi sa zapadne obale nisu uzdrmali. Njihov peti album "Muse Sick-N-Hour Mess Age" konačni je udarac gangsta rapu. Ali nisu se odrekli ni svojih starih tema, tako da u jednoj pjesmi čak pokopavaju američku zastavu. Nažalost, to je bio zadnji album prije nego su P.E. izgubili svoje značenje i otišli na marginu. |
Nitko ne zna kad je točno nastala Hip-Hop kultura, ali se zna da je to bilo sredinom 70-ih godina prošlog stoljeća. U crnačkim četvrtima Bronxa, NYC, na ulicama (prvi graffiti), u diskotekama (prvi DJ-ing i breakbeat za b-boying) i u parkovima (MC-ing), mladi su spontano započeli novi pokret koji je kasnije prerastao u globalnu kulturu.U dijelovima New Yorka sa većinskom Crnom populacijom u diskotekama je krajem 70-ih bio popularan funk. DJ-i su shvatili da neki dijelovi pjesama dižu publiku i onda su se dosjetili da bi mogli uzeti dva primjerka iste ploče i najbolji komad iste pjesme puštati opet i opet s 2 gramofona. Na to je došao MC, koji je svako malo bacio neku party rimu preko glazbe, da bi još više podigao atmosferu. Onda su se počele koristiti i ritam mašine i nastao je novi glazbeni pravac.Prvi DJ-i koji su stvarali svoju glazbu samplirajući dijelove iz starijih funky i disco pjesama bili su Afrika Bambaataa i Kool DJ Herc, i njih se danas smatra ne samo začetnicima rapa, nego elektronske glazbe općenito. Prva snimljena rap pjesma koja je čak postala hit u ljeto 1979. g. bila je legendarna "Rappers Delight" grupe The Sugarhill Gang. Nakon toga počeo je snimati i Grandmaster Flash s grupom The Furious 5 i počela se lagano stvarati scena. Treba naglasiti da je tada još rap glazba bila prostorno ograničena: snimali su je i slušali samo Crnci u New Yorku, a glazbeni kritičari ju nisu priznavali kao glazbeni pravac koji će uspjeti. Rap se snimao prvenstveno za brejkanje, bila je to tada vrlo brza elektronska glazba u kojoj je glavnu ulogu imao ritam. Danas se taj stil naziva old school. Veliki pomak napravio je Grandmaster Flash, koji je 1983. g. snimio stvar "The Message", koja je bila kritika društva i davala jasnu poruku. Tada su rapperi shvatili da je ova glazba savršena za prijenos poruka i da rime mogu imati važnu ulogu.U to vrijeme pojavila se još jedna vrlo važna grupa za povijest hip-hopa: Run DMC, koji su zapravo postavili trend i približili rap široj publici, pogotovo nakon njihove suradnje s tada poznatom heavy metal grupom Aerosmith u pjesmi "Walk This Way". Pojavila se i prva diskografska kuća zainteresirana prvenstveno za izdavanje rap albuma: Def Jam. Za njih su snimali Run DMC i LL Cool J, a korak dalje značio je prvi album jedne bijelačke rap grupe Beastie Boys, koji su kombinirali ritam mašine i sampliranje sa živom svirkom i sirovim rapom. "Licensed to Ill" iz 1987. bio je na prvom mjestu američke top-liste, prvenstveno zbog hitova "Fight For Your Right (to Party)" i "No Sleep till Brooklyn". Uglavnom, Beastie Boys su srušili mnoge rasne predrasude o Hip-Hopu kao isključivo crnačkome stilu.Sredinom 80-ih godina lagano se počela stvarati scena i na zapadnoj obali SAD-a, u LA-u. Tamo je među prvim poznatijim rapperima bio Too $hort, koji je do danas snimio već preko 15 albuma (sam Bog zna točan broj), ali glavnu riječ u LA-u krajem 80-ih vodio je naravno Ice-T, koji se tada jedini mogao mjeriti sa suparnicima s istočne obale. Njegovi albumi "Power" i "Iceberg" značili su uvod u gangsta rap maniju, o kojoj ćete više saznati u drugom dijelu.Sad se vraćamo u New York, jer kraj 80-ih je zlatno doba rap glazbe. Nastaju mnoge legendarne i kvalitetne grupe: BDP, Eric B. & Rakim, Gang Starr, a neki od njih su i danas vodeće face u svijetu Hip-Hopa. Međutim, ono najrevolucionarnije u povijesti ovog glazbenog pravca dogodilo se 1988. godine: drugi album grupe Public Enemy, pod nazivom "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back". Radi se o radikalnom načinu borbe za rasnu jednakost na svim poljima, i to na vrlo efektivan način: podloge žestoke i pune energije, tekstovi direktni, inteligentni i s jasnom porukom. Kritika ih je odmah dočekala na nož: po časopisima su ih ocjenjivali kao Crne rasiste koje treba zakonom zabraniti za dobrobit društva, a spominjali su ih često i u politickim debatama. No to je u biti ispala dobra reklama za PE, jer grupa je ubrzo postala svjetski poznata. Iako gotovo nijedna radio niti TV stanica nije baš rado vrtila njihove stvari u eteru, album se jako dobro prodao i paradoksno je to što su upravo Public Enemy, radikalni borci za prava Crnaca u Americi, postali prva rap grupa široko prihvaćena i u Europi.Kad su snimili treći album "Fear of a Black Planet" 1990. (na njemu se nalaze hitovi "911 Is a Joke", "Brothers Gonna Work It Out" i "Anti-Nigger Machine"), album je otišao platinasto (čitaj: prodao se u milijun primjeraka) samo 2 tjedna nakon izlaska. To je značilo da rap postaje glazbeni pravac na koji će se u budućnosti morati računati. |
Prvo moramo razjasniti neke pojmove, kao što su Hip-Hop, rap, MC i sl, jer to su riječi koje se danas jako često i olako koriste, a da većina ipak ne razumije njihovo pravo značenje. Najkraće rečeno, Hip-Hop je kultura, način izražavanja, za mnoge čak i način života, a rap je samo glazbeni pravac koji podržava Hip-Hop kulturu, zato nitko ne griješi kada rap glazbu nazove "hip-hop". Ali uvijek moramo biti svjesni da je Hip-Hop puno više od same glazbe. Dakle, Hip-Hop je kultura koja se manifestira kroz 4 osnovnaelementa: - MC-ing: MC = Master of Ceremony ili Microphone Controller (hr. gospodar ceremonije ili onaj koji "kontrolira" mikrofon). To je osoba koja sama sebi smišlja rime i ideje za svoje pjesme i freestyle-ove (freestyle = bacanje rima na mjestu, ravno iz glave). Moram naglasiti da je u svim područjima Hip-Hopa najvažnija ideja i originalnost, rapperi ne vole one koji kradu ili kopiraju tuđe ideje. Pravi MC mora biti u stanju svojim verbalnim vještinama podizati atmosferu na koncertima i partyjima uživo. - turntable-ism (još se kaže i DJ-ing): U Hip-Hopu, DJ je osoba koja kontrolira gramofone. On "okreće" ploče naprijed-nazad (tzv. "scratch") i tako raspolaže vještinama kako spojiti različite podloge u jednu i tako skupa s MC-jem podignuti atmosferu. Nekad se nije mogao zamisliti MC bez pratećeg mu DJ-a. - graffiti: to je vizualni element ove kulture. U početku su grafiti bili smatrani vandalizmom, danas je to vrlo cijenjena umjetnost. Ljudi koji crtaju grafite zovu se writeri. U grafitima je, kao i u ostalim elementima Hip-Hopa, najvažnija originalnost. Svaki writer ce za svoje piece-eve, bombe i taggove vaditi ideje iz svoje glave. - B-Boying (još se kaže i breakdance): Vjerujem da svi manje-više znate što je breakdance. Ulični ples koji često iziskuje i akrobatske vještine. Ljudi koji "brejkaju" zovu se B-Boys & B-Girls (kod nas "brejkeri"). Svaki od spomenutih elemenata je subkultura za sebe koja ima svoja pravila i svoj slang, a zajedno čine Hip-Hop kulturu. Neki izrazi, kao što su "freestyle" i "contest", "battle", upotrebljavaju se u sva 4 elementa. |
Svima nama dobro poznati nažalost pokojni Tupac Shakur (originalno iz New Yorka, ali zadnji dio života proveo na zapadnoj obali pljuckajući po NY-u), bio je vrlo talentirani rapper karizmatične osobnosti i sposoban liričar. Prvi album 2pacalypse Now je snimio 1991, a dvije godine kasnije slijedi još jedan underground uradak pod nazivom "Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z", ali nakon trećeg albuma se vidjelo da je pred 2 Pacom blistava karijera.Bilo je to 1995. g. Čim je završio snimanje albuma "Me Against the World", 2 Pac je morao u zatvor zbog navodnog seksualnog zlostavljanja. Prethodno je na njega izvršen pokušaj ubojstva, pretrpio je četiri metka u tijelo i preživio. I to je bio tek prvi put. Sve se događalo u New Yorku, a budući da nije mogao saznati tko je točno pucao, Pac je optužio skoro cijelu newyorsku scenu. Uglavnom to i još odlazak u zatvor samo su pomogli prodaji albuma koji je bio stvarno preokret ne samo za 2 Paca, nego je utjecao na još mnoge kasnije. Album je čak 4 tjedna bio broj 1 na američkoj top-listi, prvenstveno zbog emotivno nabijene laganice "Dear Mama", a slijedili su singlovi "Temptations" i "So Many Tearz". Kad je izašao iz zatvora, odjednom je bio svjetski poznata zvijezda, bahat i nabrijan na puno poznatih imena sa scene. Potpisao je za Suge Knightovu izdavačku kucu Death Row, koja je tada još uvijek bila na samom vrhu, vodeću riječ je imao Dre, a oni su prethodno proslavili Snoop Dogga pa se nije moglo ni zamisliti što će tek biti od već poznatog 2 Paca. Ubrzo je izašao njegov četvrti album (dvostruki) "All Eyez on Me" (1996), na kojem se nalazi onaj hit "California Love" (feat. Dr.Dre), pjesma koja ga je proslavila ne samo su Americi, nego i u ostatku svijeta, a slijedili su singlovi "How Do U Want It" i "I Ain't Mad at 'Cha". U to vrijeme Pacov prijatelj The Notorious B.I.G. a.k.a. Biggie Smalls iz New Yorka se također probijao. On je snimao za Puff Daddyjevu (današnji P.Diddy) izdavačku kuću Bad Boy i već s prvim albumom Ready to Die (1994, singlovi "Juicy", "Big Poppa" i "One More Chance") ostvario veliki uspjeh, pogotovo jer su njegovi spotovi bili vrlo rado vrćeni na MTV-ju. Kako su 2 Pac i Biggie bili sve popularniji, tako su i postali međusobni rivali i ubrzo su od prijatelja postali najgori neprijatelji. Jedan drugoga su optuživali za "kupljenje fora i krađu stila", a Pac je ovoga čak okrivio da je odgovoran za pucanje 1994. Pac je to sve u pjesmama jasno rekao, čak javno prijetio smrću Biggieju, Puff Daddyju te mladim newyorskim izvođačima Junior M.A.F.I.A. i Mobb Deep (to se najjasnije vidi u komercijalnoj pjesmi "Hit 'Em Up" (feat. Outlawz), za koju je snimljen i videospot), a najadekvatnije su mu odgovorili mladi kraljevi newyorškog undergrounda Mobb Deep u pjesmi "Drop a Gem on 'Em" (album "Hell on Earth" 1997.). I tako, počela su prepucavanja preko pjesama, opasne prijetnje i jako grube riječi s obje strane i u to se umiješalo puno izvođača te je "beef" (u americkom hip-hop slangu izraz za sukob) dobio vrlo široke razmjere, to je postala borba stilova između L.A.-a i NYC-a. Ubrzo je postalo jasno da stvari izmiču kontroli. Tupac Shakur je u rujnu 1996. godine na vrhuncu glazbene i glumačke karijere ubijen, nakon pucnjave u Las Vegasu (noc kada je tamo tadašnji prvak u boksu Mike Tyson nokautirao Seldona nakon par sekundi meča). 2 Pacov ubojica nikad nije pronađen. Brojni fanovi širom svijeta počeli su masovno širiti teorije o tome kako je njihov idol još uvijek živ, čak su pružali razne dokaze za svoje tvrdnje, a čak i dan-danas, svake godine izađe bar jedan novi 2 Pacov album. Jasno je da je to njegova ostavština koju je snimio za života, ali nije htio odmah objaviti, ali to je dokaz koliko je bio produktivan.Nakon tog događaja koji je potresao hip-hop svijet, ali i cijelu glazbenu industriju, gotovo da više nije bilo poznatog rappera koji ne izlazi van iz kuće bez tjelohranitelja, blindiranih kola ili policijske pratnje. Pacovom nekadašnjem prijatelju, a sada glavnom neprijatelju, spomenutom Biggieju, nije pomogla niti policijska zaštita kada je došao u L.A. na neku dodijelu nagrada. Bilo je to u travnju 1997. godine, nepoznate osobe izrešetale su automobil u kojemu se vozio i tako je otišao još jedan veliki rapper, The Notorious B.I.G. (pravim imenom Christopher Wallace). Ubrzo nakon Biggiejeve smrti, Bad Boy izdaje njegov dvostruki album (drugi po redu), pod nazivom "Life after Death". Album je bio veliki hit s obe strane bare (pamtimo ga po hitovima "Hypnotize" i "Mo' Money, Mo' Problemz", ali ima gore još puno boljih stvari). Prava je šteta što Biggie nije doživio da uživa u plodovima svog rada, a na njegovoj tragediji čini se da je najviše profitirao Puff Daddy, koji je čak snimio onu ljigavu stvar "I'll Be Missing You" i posvetio ju Biggieju, a u pjesmi gostuje Biggiejeva supruga Faith Evans, za koju se Tupac hvalio da ju je svojevremeno ševio. I tako, dok je cijela scena pala u emotivnu krizu zbog velikih tragedija, neki su ljudi od svega toga uspjeli napraviti cirkus.U svakom slucaju, da su stvari bile drugačije (i da je drukčiji mentalitet u igri), Biggie i Pac bi danas bili vjerojatno i popularniji od jednog Eminema ili 50 Centa. Obojica su bili talentirani i puno su obećavali. Da su oni živi, danas bi hip-hop možda bio bogatiji, možda čak i drugačiji. Šteta, nikad nećemo znati. |
Iz zloglasne četvrti New York-a (Queens), dolaze nam Mobb Deep. Reputaciju crnih agresivaca i dalje brižljivo njeguju, postavljajući standarde glazbi nastaloj na rubnim djelovima grada. Prodigy i Havoc agresivno odgovaraju na upit o nepoštivanju sebe samog kao osobe: "To sranje koje su mi drugi navukli nije mi naškodilo -ne znate me crnčuge, no moramo promijeniti to sranje, ja ću završiti to sranje do kraja". Grupa je također započela osobni obračun s nekim poznatim rapperima prozivajući neke da su homoseksualci želja za prolijevanjem krvi potvrđena je i u pjesmi "Killa that nigga" prepunoj agresivnosti i rasističke mržnje.Od 1993 i njihovog prvijenca "Juvenile Hell", znači već više od desetljeća, Mobb Deep, tj. Havoc i Prodigy, spadaju u sam vrh, Hip Hop scene, a ovim, ukupno šesti, službeni, studijski albumom to i potvrđuju... Iako im ovaj album sigurno nije najbolji u njihovoj karijeri ("The Infamous" i "Hell On Earth" teško da će više nadmašiti), ali i dalje ne podilaze publici, tekstovi su im i dalje sirovi a beatovi maštoviti i prepoznatljivi...Uz obavezna gostovanja raznoraznih kolega (od kojih su neke suradnje manje uspjele), ovaj album sigurno predstavlja jedan od vrhunaca ovogodišnje HipHop produkcije. "Got it twisted", "Win or Lose", "One of ours part2" i pogotovo "Throw your hands" koja je nastala u suradnji sa Superproducerom Kanye West, koja je obogaćena violinama ali nije sladunjava kako bismo mogli strahovati po imenu producenta već se perfektno uklapa u ostatak materijala na ovom odličnom albumu. |
1986 - 1991 Kalifornija, SAD N.W.A. je grupa koja je obilježila rap glazbu s kraja 80-ih i oblikovala nove naraštaje glazbenika koji će kasnije vladati hip-hop scenom. Pojavili su se kao konkurencija hard core rap grupi Public Enemy i za razliku od njihovih socijalno osvještenih poruka ponudili slavlje i promociju hedonističkog načina života (najčešće kriminalnog). To se uz njihov funk prizvuk pokazalo kao dobitna kombinacija, jer su njihovi albumi N.W.A. and the Posse i Straight Outta Compton postali veliki hitovi, prvi samo kod underground publike, no drugi se, unatoč ignorancije medija, uspio probiti do širokih masa publike i postaviti nove standarde u glazbenom svijetu. Okosnicu grupe su sačinjavala tri člana: Ice Cube, Eazy-E i Dr. Dre., a zatim DJ Yella, the Arabian Prince , the D.O.C. i MC Ren. Nakon uspjeha odmah je uslijedio blagi pad kada je Ice Cube 1989 godine napustio grupu zbog nekih razmirica financijske prirode. Odmah nakon odlaska uslijedila su medijska prepucavanja između Icea i ostatka grupe, rezultirajući Iceovom pjesmom "No Vaseline", koja je bila očiti napad na vodstvo grupe. Nakon njegova odlaska, grupa je snimila 100 Miles and Runnin' i Efil4zaggin ("Niggaz 4 Life") koji su se s više humora i parodije osvrtali na istu problematiku. Unatoč činjenici da se nalaze na samom vrhuncu slave, grupi smrtni udarac zadaje Dr.Dre, napustivši grupu 1992 godine. Dr.Dre je nakon odlaska osnovao izdavačku kuću Death Row Records i pokrenuo vrlo uspješnu samostalnu karijeru kao pjevač, kantautor i producent. Yella i MC Ren su također otišli u solo vode, no svi pokušaji da se profiliraju kao uspješni izvođači prošli su neuspješno. U nekoliko sljedećih godina Dre i Eazy su se često medijski sukobljavali, no Dre i Ice Cube pomirili su se s Eazyem neposredno prije Eazyeve smrti od AIDS-a 1995 godine. |

50 Cent je hodajuća bomba, i to ne ona koja završava nego otpočinje rat. Već nekoliko godina otkako je zakoračio u svoje dvadesete preživio je ovaj njujorški reper probadanja, atentate, prijetnje, hapšenje, a navodno se izmaknuo i pred metkom koji je završio u tuđoj glavi. A sad je, na početku nečega što bi mogao biti rat u hip-hop svijetu u kojem je on jedna od glavnih meta, objavio prvi major label album, komercijalno najuspješniji debi album u povijesti. Prije nego što je lani potpisao ugovor na milijun dolara za Eminemovu etiketu Shady Records, 50 Cent je imao tri snimljena albuma i životno iskustvo koje možete poželjeti neprijatelju - majka mu je umrla kad je imao 8 godina, odgajali su ga baka i djed (i na tome im je zahvalan) a preživljavao je od preprodaje droge zbog koje je gledao i rešetke s krive strane. Tada se još zvao Curtis Jackson, a kada je postajao primjećeniji na hip-hop sceni pojavili su se novi problemi - proboden je nožem, da bi navodno zbog stare pjesme 'How To Rob' skoro bio ubijen - upucan je u nogu, ruku i lice (pa sad ima rupu u zubima zbog koje mu je promijenjen govor!?!). Kad je jesenas ubijen Jam Master Jay policija je sklonila 50 Centa jer je taj metak bio navodno namijenjen upravo njemu. Pa i da je to bio kraj ubijanju u hip-hop svijetu žrtva bi bila prevelika, ali izgleda da se tek zahuktava bitka između hip-hop tabora (Istok-Zapad, Def Jam-Murder Inc.), a i policija je zadnjih mjeseci zainteresirana za hip-hop svijet (ne zbog dobre glazbe), dok se često u ovim pričama pojavljuje ime našeg ovotjednog heroja. Ali zato ga sada štite dva najmoćnija kreativca u hip-hopu - Dr. Dre i Eminem. Ali budući da njihova protekcija nije premoćna, 50 Cent se uokolo vozika u blindiranom auto otpornom na metke i bombe, a omiljena majica mu je pancirni prsluk. |
